The four University of Idaho students found dead overnight Sunday in a home near campus have been identified, the Moscow, Idaho, Police Department reported Monday.
The students were Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Wash.; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, of Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee GonCalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho.
Moscow police said they are investigating the deaths as homicides. However, he did not provide any other information about the events. As of noon Monday, no suspects were in custody. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the case to contact police.
“The Moscow Police Department and the city of Moscow are deeply saddened by the families of these individuals, their colleagues and friends, and our community during this time,” the institution said.
“We send our sincerest condolences to each and every person affected by this incident,” he added.
Officers responded to a call about an unconscious person shortly before noon Sunday and discovered all four bodies, the Moscow Police Department said in a news release.
“It is with deep sadness that I share with you that the university was notified today of the deaths of four University of Idaho students living off campus who are believed to have been homicide victims,” said University President Scott Green. , in a statement addressed to the community.
The tragic discovery occurred while another US university campus, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, experienced an intense search early Monday for an armed man, identified as a local student, accused of killing three people and wounding two others Sunday on the university grounds.
At the University of Idaho, in-person and online classes this Monday have been canceled and will resume Tuesday.
